How on earth does that work? If you equipped with it, would you get hammered by everything?

rust is based on percentage (1% on a stat I believe), and once you get alot going it does effects like this, this weapon I suspect I inherited has rusted for 3-5 years or more.
and a weapon can rust a certain stat multiple times, ask DS on this info

Rust is actually less than 1%. Somewhere between .5% and .75% (it can vary, there is some randomness to it, but there are still parameters).
An item with -600a can rust EITHER 3 or 4 stat points (per day).
