OK, so I thought I'd try and increase my wits by mezzing. I have 105 wits and have been reasonably successful before. Today I came across an elf in the forest with 50-60 wits, and he mezzed me and pinched "half" of my gear. Could not believe it. I've mezzed giants and golem and stuff, and never attempt to do mezzing in Azteca or Shang as I'm nowhere near ready for that. I didn't even think an elf would get near me. Are elves a special case at all? The real PITA was I was carrying my untouched 210 SAC and lost that . Also lost 450+ of my faeries (left me with 4), 1000+ golden apples, 1000+ blasts (100 left), all my enchantsexcept 8 (about 250) , 200+ dragon scale soups, several hundred million marks. The money is no big loss, but some of the other stuff is, the fearies and the soup are my 2 nd & 3 rd biggest dissapointment. The SAC I'm really annoyed for having on me at the time. I was planning on sending to Kid_rock for ES'ing but he's very busy at the moment and I hadn't got to banking it or my cash today. Is there any explanation as to why half doesn't mean half? It's not half of everything other wise I'd have 200+ faeries, 1000+ apples. And it's not half of then umber of items either otherwise it would have take all of faeries rather than 99% of them, and all of my blasts/enchants rather than 99% of them. It to me seems a random percentage of a random percentage of items. 1/3 of my money, none of my gold/platinum rings turnips or warts, 95% of my faeries, maybe half of my unidentified items.

Oh no, Dees! Ok, to answer a few of your questions. When the screen says the elf takes half your gear, it does not mean 50% of each item. In fact, I don't believe it means 50% of your total items. I believe the items and numbers are randomized. I've been mezzed and lost far less than 50% of my total items, and other times far more. Another answer regarding elves: it all depends on who the monsters are. If you try to mezz monsters who don't have mezz abilities themselves, like golems, giants, or azteca warriors and aren't successful, it just says they avoid your attempt. The danger comes when trying to mezz monsters who have a mezz ability themselves (elves, harpies, wizards, jags), if you're unsuccessful in mezzing them, they in turn mezz you. At least sometimes. Basically, it can become a battle of wits, and you're not always guaranteed to win, even with higher wits. Therefore, it's generally good practice to only try mezzing monsters that can't mezz back. One last thing: a gameplay tip. I really feel bad about the loss of your gear. Believe me, I've been in somewhat the same boat. Here's how to make sure it doesn't happen again...a little thing called Silver Storage. Seriously, only take items you absolutely need for questing when venturing out. I only carry around a few thousand marks and junk when questing. It also leaves more room for you to pick up items when questing, and that way if something tragic does happen, you've only lost some junk, which is more easily replaced. I'd even get in the habit of only keeping a certain amount of junk on you. Do you really need 2000 golden apples in one day of questing? No, of course not. So take 200 and leave the rest in storage. Same with fairies - I only carry around 5-10 at one time. Effectively using storage is a vital part of safe questing. Therefore the next time disaster happens, you won't be up the creek as much.

Thanks Gawayn. Half doesn't equal half is what I wanted to know. I have obviously misunderstood the mezzing capabilities I have been mezzed before and killed rather than my gear pinched, but it was by Jags and I ran first, I never tried to mezz them). I have mezzed wizards and harpies without issue (Are wizzards in Goblin mount?), but I must admint I thought I'd be safe with the elf - having less than half my wits. Was not to be Maybe I just got extra unlucky with the elf. Who knows... It was pure bad luck I lost the SAC, I was so thrilled about getting one I ran off to ID it straight away. Stupidly I did not stores it and I paid the price. I do take your point about using storage. However, this does halve your storage does it not? Storing faeries etc in your pack and in Silver storage means less room for weapons you pickup. I guess it's a moot point now and in the future I will make use of it. Thanks for your word of wisdom

Hey Dees. I misspoke a bit earlier, and you were right to call me on it. SOME monsters who mezz you (like jags) will only kill you if they're successful. Some, however (like pandas, elves, others), will steal what you have instead. I'm not sure if there's a list somewhere...let me look. And yes, if you have junk in your pack and in storage, it is duplicating a few space items, but it's well worth the effort. And really, that's why you create storage alts, so you don't get full to bursting with your mains. That, and duplicated junk takes up...what? 10 spaces? Maybe 15? That still leaves 50-60 spaces in storage, plus what's in your pack. If you only keep the good items you find, you shouldn't be plagued with storage issues too bad. As you quest more, I'd suggest starting a storage alt or two, so you don't get caught short with storage. Believe me, I've been fried bad a couple times through my own stupidity, and been thankful I had backup supplies sitting in storage. Hopefully you'll not be confronted with this situation agai, but if you are...

Yeah, frys don't keep you from getting robbed. I'm not sure even Thief Insurance would have helped.

It didn't help Gawayn - 28 of them reduced to 3. King_Smitty I do normally just batter elves right enough, but as I was working on wits thought I'd mezz as much as possible.
I have 2 other alts I could share the storage burden with, and maybe I don't need to horde every non silver high stat right enough.
Rest assured Gawayn, this will not be happening again.

Sometimes the most painful lessons stick with us the best, sadly. Glad to see you're a wiser dwarf after this. I'll try to get you some replenishments in the next couple of days...

Wizards - Fields Elves/Unicorns - Forest Mages - Mounds/Dungeouns Mermaid - Go Fish Medusa - Hie Brasil Panda/Ninjas - Shangala Priest - Azteca
All of these will try to mezz and steal your items rather than outright kill you. These are the ones I know. I am sure about all of them except Unicorns, I seem to remember them taking half as well but I am not 100% sure.

Thanks everyone. I'll try and keep this in mind and not carry everything with me. And not mezz the wrong thing! Many thanks to all who donated stuff. It's hard to tie characters to names in the Castle. But I know Sirruss, Smitty and Kid_rock (twice) donated stuff to get me back on my feet. Very generous
