...of this story, there wasn't much to say. That was until the mystical powers suddenly came upon me.
That's right, mystical powers. I don't know where they came from, or why, but there they are anyway. I'm not exactly what you would call a superhero, maybe even closer to a superzero. I don't even live in one of those fantasy worlds you read about in books, where everyone has a power, or at least the important people do. I was just living my average life in an average world.
Now it's all different. This is my story.

Where to begin, now? When did this all start? Ah, the very first thing I noticed that was different--that was when I got sick. It was a puzzling disease, at least that's what the doctors told me as they frowned and squinted at their clipboards. All I knew was that it hurt. A lot.
At first they tried giving me pain medications, but none of them helped in the slightest. The pain continued for months, until it seemed that my entire existence was pain itself. Then it stopped. As suddenly as it had come, it left me alone again. It almost made me feel empty, purposeless, to have what had been my entire existence so suddenly yanked away, but the feeling passed. They kept me for a few more days to do some studying, but since it didn't come back and I refused to stay in that hospital while they tried to figure this out, they had to let me go home.
That was when it really got weird.

Sure, for a few days it seemed like everything was going back to normal, as the old routine started coming back.
But it didn't last long, no. It was chilly that day, just starting to show signs of slipping from fall into winter. I was going to check my mail, just a short walk from my house. I was halfway there when I saw him, standing not too far away. This was the type of guy that you didn't want to mess with--huge, muscular, and in general mean-looking. That alone wouldn't have caused me much concern, but he was staring right at me. His chest was heaving, and I could see his breath billow out in the chilly air. I decided the mail could wait, and started walking back to my house, back to safety, but he wasn't about to let me go. Running faster than I would have thought possible, he tackled me to the ground. I barely managed to scream, "You can have my money!" before my breath was knocked completely out of me.
Apparently he wasn't after my money, because he went berserk and started pounding me. I struggled like crazy, but it only made me get hurt worse, so I stopped and accepted my fate.
I could feel the life draining out of my body. It was not a pleasant feeling. But...then it stopped. And reversed. I suddenly felt like life and energy was pouring into my body by the bucket. It was...strange. I lost control, then. Snapped completely. My attacker had fallen off me, looking drained, and I murdered him. I don't know why, but I did. That was the first time I killed someone, but not the last...

I must have blacked out then, because I woke up in a darkened room. Strangely enough, I was...glowing.
"Don't worry, the glowing goes away eventually, and only starts after you've absorbed a lot of energy."
I looked up, startled to see someone leaning against the wall. He hadn't been there before, had he...?
"I see that you're confused, and I don't blame you. Let me try to explain. Your life just got a whole lot more interesting, friend. We keep a watch on the hospitals for people going through strange, intense pain that suddenly goes away. Our research shows that such is one of the first signs. You've been given a gift, my friend, a very rare gift, too. It varies, though we're not entirely sure why or how, but that's irrelevant. You can drain the life from anyone you touch. In fact, I only know of three others with that gift. The most common is the berserker, like the one you killed earlier. No! Don't be concerned, we sent him on purpose. The best and most sure way to see if someone is truly gifted, is to make an attempt on their life. You would be surprised how many of those types we bring here, so don't worry yourself about it. Any questions?"
This had to be a joke. I was waiting for the smiling host to jump out and tell me how I had been fooled. Failing that, I asked, "What is this all about? Am I a super hero now, or what? You mentioned research...is that something about me, too?"
He laughed, "Good questions! You could say you're a type of super hero, or you will be. Our organization is devoted to making the world a better and more peaceable place. You will be part of that great work. As for our research, we may ask to perform a few tests on you, especially with such a rare gift, but no harm nor pain will come to you."
I sighed, then, although I don't know why. It seemed like my life was actually getting better. Sure, it hadn't been bad before, but it hadn't exactly been exciting, either. Now, here I was presented with the chance to make the world better! My head fell back on to the pillow, and I closed my eyes, still processing this new information. I asked, "When do I start?"
He smiled. "Whenever you're ready, we can begin training you to make the best use of your gift. We still know relatively little about it, since it can vary even amongst people with the same gift. You can rest and think this over for now. You'll find clean clothes and anything else you may need where you would usually think to look for them, and when you're ready simply walk out the door. Someone will be waiting for you."
"Thank you." I opened my eyes and...he was already gone...
