(The next part, feel free to leave comments and suggestions)
He raised his head and looked down on the human lying in front of him, the human stared back up at him and their eyes met for an instant. They lay there for a moment, looking into each others eyes, and he could hear – and almost feel – the sound of the humans heart beating very fast inside the small body. He knew that the human was probably scared, perhaps its parents had warned it of dragons when it was still a little child. He tried something he thought was a smile to calm the human, apparently it did not have the wanted effect since the human begun creeping up against the wall even harder. Perhaps it was something in his appearance that was frightening this young human lying in front of him, he then remembered that his teeth were about half the length of a grown human so perhaps that was what frightened it. He looked into the young, light blue eyes of the trembling human, the poor thing was afraid, it had probably been told since childhood about what terrible creatures the dragons were. Now that he knew that the human wasn’t a soldier set out to fight him, and didn’t pose any threat to him, he felt a bit sorry for the little thing. He tried to take a friendly appearance and spoke in his dark voice as softly as he could. Unfortunately a dragons voice is not always as soft and friendly as would be preferred, especially when it has not been used for many hundreds of years so it did not sound as friendly as he had hoped for. He also felt that he stumbled somewhat on the words since he hadn’t spoken them for so long.
“Please tell me little human, why have you come to my cave?”
The human looked up at him with a glance of disbelief, gasping like a fish on dry land. He sighed deeply and tried to speak to it once again.
“Could you please be so kind my little one as to tell me why you have come into my cave?”
It looked back up at him and blinked repeatedly while swallowing nervously although its heartbeats seemed to slow down a little bit. He wondered if perhaps the human didn’t understand him, he knew that there were many different tongues amongst the race of men and perhaps he had spoken in the wrong one. He knew a few more so perhaps he should try another one, although he could also have spoken the words incorrectly since it had been so long since he had used them. So he decided to try in the same tongue once again, and in the same – hopefully –friendly tone.
“Are my words incorrect little one?”
This time it reacted a bit differently and its heartbeat and breath seemed to calm down a little. It looked into his yellow eyes and replied in an unsteady voice.
“Your words are correct.”
He tried to smile once again to the little human and spoke as soft and friendly as he possibly could.
“Then would you please be so kind as to answer my first question little one?”
It blinked and stared somewhat confused at him.
“Your first question?”
He sighed again, the human had probably been too afraid at first to actually hear the words he had spoken to it. Therefore he repeated the question once again and tried to speak as clearly as he could, in order too make sure the human would understand him this time.
“Yes little one, I asked why you have entered my cave on this day. No human has set its foot in here for many centuries now.”
The human stood up on its feet and walked a little closer to him, it scratched its head a little while looking at him. It would seem that most of its fear had left it even if it was obviously still surprised and shaken.
“I came in here seeking shelter for the night and prepare some food, I have been walking for a long time and needed a little rest.”
He nodded his large head slightly, that answer made sense as he could feel the night closing in on the outside. That would explain why the human had entered the cave, however it did not explain what it was doing there to begin with. Why would a human be out walking in this remote place?
“Little one, how come you are travelling these mountains where no human willingly sets its foot down?”
The small human – well, actually it wasn’t really small by human standards, as it was probably around six feet tall – smiled a little.
“I am somewhat of a modern adventurer and therefore I try to travel places where men don’t usually venture. I have tried depth diving in the world oceans, I’ve tried to bike around the world and now I’m trying to climb the great mountains.”
He looked at it a little confused, there were some words spoken that he did not recognize, and the way that the human spoke was different from what he had ever heard before.
“Please tell me little one, what is this word bike?”
The small human scratched its head again and looked at him somewhat surprised.
“You’ve never heard of a bike? Well, it is a kind of transportation, it is cheaper and cleaner then a car and don’t need any fuel to move, so it is pretty handy when travelling in less populated areas.”
He blinked a couple of times and was even more confused now.
“Car, fuel? Please tell me little one, what are these things of which you speak?”
The little human looked up at him, really twisting its neck to try and look into his eyes.
“Could I please ask a question or two myself big fellow?”
He looked down a bit surprised on it, no one of its race had ever dared to speak in that way to him, much less ask him anything.
“Well, yes my little one, please go ahead and ask your questions. What do you wish to know?”
The human scratched its chin a moment.
“Well, then first I would like to know if you could please lay down a bit? My neck is hurting from looking upwards all the time.”
He shifted his big body backwards a bit, so that he could lay down his head in front of the human. It was really tiny, even with him lying down and it standing up, his head was still at least twice as high as the human was tall.
“There little one, what else do you wish to ask me?”
It seemed a little awkward and nervous all of the sudden and once again scratched its head.
“Well, I guess I’d like to know just what you are?”
This time it was his turn to look with disbelief at the little thing standing before him, he then spoke with a deep voice.
“I am a dragon of course, at least that is your name for it, are you meaning to tell me that you have never seen or heard of us before?”
The little human shook its head a bit nervous.
“I have most definitely never seen a dragon before, and the only times I’ve ever heard of a dragon is in fairy tales.”
The big dragon turned his head and he stared into the wall for a moment, then he faced the human again.
“A fairy tale? I recognize these words, but I’ve never really quite understood what they are about since there are no fairies in this world, and even if there were, what would a dragon have to do with them?”
The little human seemed more and more awkward and it seemed as if he didn’t want to say what he was about to say.
“A fairy tale is about something that is not considered real, like a story of old times made up to entertain.”
The human swallowed very nervously after having said this, apparently it wasn’t sure of how the large dragon would react to what it had said. The dragon stared back into the wall, then he took a deep breath and some smoke came out his nostrils as he turned to the human again – and now his eyes had turned hard.
