A Dragons Tale – Chapter 1
He blinked a couple of times as he woke up from his deep, untroubled rest. Even though he had been sleeping soundly for countless days his senses was as always very keen and alerted him when something came close to his resting-place. That which had awoken him from his sleep was a familiar scent, and even though he hadn’t smelled it for a very long time now, he still remembered it clearly. The scent was that of a human, and even though he didn’t trust the humans he didn’t really dislike them as many others of his race did, he simply tried to avoid them so he wouldn’t come into any unnecessary conflicts. He knew that the humans were something of a foolish race in general – even though some of them were intelligent and well behaved – so he had decided long ago not to cross path with them unless necessary. Of course he still had to leave this resting-place from time to time to hunt for food, and from time to time the prey would have to consist of some of the animals that the humans kept, such as a sheep or a cow. Naturally this could anger the humans but they normally wouldn’t try anything foolish as they seemingly had both respect and fear of his kind. The last one he couldn’t really understand since his kin didn’t really pose any threat to the humans. Sure, some of his race disliked – and sometimes even hated – the humans for what they had done in the past, but none of them would impose on the humans as long as they were left alone. However, unfortunately the humans were a rather ignorant group of individuals with a tendency to fear what they didn’t know or understand. With this in mind he took a deep breath to get a good taste of the scent coming from outside. It was definitely a human out there, most likely a young male, and it was probably no more then fifty yards away from the entrance of the cave where this resting place where. From the scent of the human he got the feeling that it was somewhat nervous and probably not a soldier. Well, that was comforting but he still wondered why this human had come this far into the mountains. Few of them had the tenacity or courage to go this far anymore and there hadn’t been a single one of them in these parts for well over a century now. He decided to pretend to be asleep until he knew what this humans intentions were, perhaps the human didn’t even know that it had stumbled across this resting-place. The sound of the human tripping over some rocks while entering the cave caught his ears but he lay still yet and kept his eyes closed, although he glimpsed a little to get a view of the human coming into the cave. He could see a rather young male, most likely somewhere around its twenties, with both a dark blonde hair and a dark blond beard shifting in shades of red. The little human wore some strange kind of clothes that he had never seen before. Well, that wasn’t surprising since he hadn’t dealt with humans for many hundreds of years now and they were bound to have changed a bit since he’d last laid eyes upon them. The human didn’t seem to have noticed him yet which was kind of surprising since he was quite large – especially compared to a human – and the cave wasn’t very dark. Although he remembered that the humans eyes were not very well adjusted to darkness so that could be why it hadn’t noticed him yet. The human kept moving towards him and gazed almost straight onto him. Apparently the human wasn’t sure of what it saw because it kept moving forward very slowly, careful not to trip over anything, until it stood but a few feet from him where he seemingly slept in a calm manner. Then the human probably realized what was lying in front of it because it suddenly reacted as if an invisible fist had struck it. It staggered backwards and tripped over a rock so it fell backwards against the wall, its eyes were filled with disbelief. Some words slipped out over its lips but it was little more then a mumbling sound, so he couldn’t really understand much of it even though he knew the tongue of humans quite well. Still he managed to pick up one familiar word from the humans rambling, it was the word the humans used for his kin – dragon.
