I wrote this a year or so ago, for a class that was doing a "Death" project. Interpretations of it, peoples reactions to it and such. Looking back at it, it always makes me smile, so here ya go.
Of Life And Death
Birth,
A new world,
Death is a complete unknown,
Time continues,
and so does ignorance and bliss.
Till one's teen years,
death usually remains mostly unknown.
The only thing,
to ruin your day,
is jesus juice with Micheal J.
From ones vibrant teens,
to the blah of middle age,
there are many views and takes on death,
of these I'll choose two,
and share their bizzare
beliefs with you.
Somewhere between their teens,
and the obscurity of middle age,
some pass through a gloomy stage,
these are the goth, the emo,
with their dark and dreary views,
they see things quite askew.
Death isn't something to fear,
or even to ignore,
it's a goal,
something to strive for.
Of their views,
I'll summarize:
When life gets you down,
Maybe someone you love has died,
or maybe you smudged the black makeup above your eye,
Just like Johny Cash,
You hang your head and cry.
The next group,
of which I'll speak,
is summarized by a particularly vicious young man,
Live fast,
Die young.
These men and women see things in a simplistic way,
and tend to be in a drug induced haze,
Death's inevitable,
get all you can from life,
as fast as you can,
and who cares of consequnces,
we all end up the same anyways.
As one ages,
Death grows near,
ignoring it is quite hard,
death is as persistant as
that damn kid always in your yard.
Some ignore death,
won't happen to me,
I'm too rich, or nice.
But death comes to all,
No matter what,
even should you be too sexy,
for Milan, New York, and Japan.
Others still are crippled with fear,
death is here, now there, it's everywhere.
They think to much of the future,
they miss present.
To those who share this view,
just take a tip from our drug addled friends,
"Just be cool man"
The last view I'll talk of to you,
is one which comes with maturity, and wisdom.
Death is inevitable,
yes it is.
But don't fear it,
you still live now.
And yet, don't live too fast,
Like so many before,
including young Mr. V,
you'll burn out before your time.
So let death come,
just let it take it's time.
