By Bre'Cheye: As he spoke the words of a solitary traveling Bard, her mind went back to the first time she had met him. It had been over a year ago in the tavern near her clan's castle and even though they had only spoken a few times, she had sensed his gentle spirit and loyal heart. But then she remembered those men... the ones she had at first thought had been sent by her father to find her. His words seemed to lull her, made her feel at peace and made her day feel like it had not all been in vain. "...worthy of taking to my clan..." The end of his sentence brought her back and made her wonder what his clan would think of her. After she had quickly ran from the Inn, for fear of who those men were, she wished many times that she would run into Michaelys again, in hopes of hearing more of the enchanting music she knew that he was able to weave through the air. After finding the cottage she now lived in, she had sent a few notes to Michaelys and at first he did answer; even though some of his letters had seemed 'stiff' and short. She now realized that more than likely, Michaelys had been on the run all that time... and perhaps the few words he had written was all he could manage at that time. His notes had stopped, and her greatest fear always nagged at the back of her mind. It was fear that she never could quite accept, a fear that Michaelys had been killed. And so when he had stumbled upon her cottage, she felt that Tunare, her goddess, had sent him. Hearing him sigh and seeing him look down into his mug, she at first thought that the cider wasn't as good as it should be. 'Perhaps it needed more sugar,' she thought to herself as she jumped up from the table. "Here, let me get you some sugar for that, I'm sure that will make it taste much better." She made a face as she lifted the lid to her sugar can as she discovered there wasn't even one teaspo on left. "No, no no!! No!" she swore, stomping her foot. "I'm out of sugar!" She quickly searched her mind in an effort to remember if she had thought to pick up any sugar on her last 'check-in' to he clan. And realizing she had not, she shook her head while leaning against the counter with both hands gripping the edge. "I am so stupid! I can't believe I forgot to buy more sugar!" She moved quickly to the hooks near the back door to grab her cloak, and as she began to pull it on, she said to Michaelys, "Will you do me a huge favor? Please?" She wrapped the red knit scarf around her neck then looked at Michaelys as she pulled her red knit mittens from the cloak's pockets. "Will you please, please stay here and watch the fire in the fireplace... in the living room. I will run into town, I know a short-cut, to get more sugar. Besides, I have to check into the clan, to let them know I am still around and alive." Grabbing an empty covered basket then turning the knob of the back door, she added before setting off for town, "I won't be gone long, make yourself at home and in the cellar... toward the back, I have a cured ham hanging from the rafters." A small smile crossed her face before stepping into the cold air that quickly picked up the loose curl at her forehead. [corrected the word teaspo on due to censure against poor instruments for getting soup to mouths ]

By Michaelys: Watching her as she jumped up to fetch some sugar, Michaelys was amazed to see how dismayed she became. Before he could say that the cider was already perfect, she was talking about 'a quick run into town', and 'checking in with her clan.' Seeing her so energetic, he sat bemused with a smile on his lips, as she mentioned something about a cured ham, and keeping the fire going. Then with a swirl of her cloak she was out the door. Staring at the door, he heard her swiftly walking through the leaves until the sound whispered away. Listening now to the crackle of the hearth from the other room, he looked back down into his mug, wondering what had just happened. Sitting back after a moment, he decided she must have something important to do. Checking in is probably a good idea, although he hadn't had any direct contact with His clan in a number of years. Finishing his cider before it cooled too much, he got up and walked to the other room. Realizing it would probably take a while to commune with his Goddess, he tossed a large log on the fire and headed up to his room for some light meditation. Once he arrived in his room, he sat cross-legged on the floor and reached out with his mind to Y'n Varra. Almost instantly, he felt Her presence, and bowed his head. Deep in communion with the Clan's Deity, he grew unaware of his surroundings as he smelled the wild flowers, and heard the roaring of the waterfall near Her meadows. Her presence drew nearer to him, and he felt Her healing remove the scars, only days old, from his body. His sense of self was renewed, but She felt the lack as did he. He told Her of his lost instruments, and he heard Her laughter, "Don't you remember how to craft new ones, Michaelys? It's not been so long since you crafted your last set." Feeling eased by Her presence, he remembered he had the skill to craft new ones, it was just that his Father had crafted the last set, and it would be long indeed until he could see his Father again. Receiving a kiss on his brow he awakened from his trance and saw where he was, the sounds and aromas of his homeland fading away and the light aroma of cider drifted to his him. Getting up and stretching, he headed back downstairs, hoping to have time to prepare the ham before Bre'Cheye returned.

By Bre'Cheye:
With the hood of her red cloak pulled tightly around her head and the matching scarf snug around her neck, she quickly made her way toward the small town of her clan, Wizards & Warriors. It had snowed lightly the night before, only leaving a skiff of it to cover the ground and fallen leaves. She was glad that it hadn't snowed more than that, for she hated the cold and really didn't like traveling in deep snow. She had the ability to teleport from location to location, a Druid spell giving her the power to fade from sight and to reappear in another. But she had never really fully learned that particular spell and since it usually sent her to a place she didn't want to go, she rarely tried to use it.
After walking rather briskly for close to an hour, she finally caught sight of the large house or small castle (which ever one preferred to view it as) and breathed a small sigh of relief. She would check in with her clan leader to let him know she was okay, then head for the market to purchase her sugar and whatever else caught her eye.
Upon checking in at the castle, she was pleasantly surprised that her clan-mates and friends had seen fit for her to be denoted an Honored Warrior for another term; this time for three months. Smiling, she left a note for Sirinnu, to let him know she would do everything within her power as an Honored Warrior to make him proud of her, then placed the sealed envelope in the slot with Sirinnu's name beneath it. She then made her way out of the 'castle' and down the short distance to the open-aired market.
The market wasn't very busy on this wintery day, so she was at least glad of that for it made her buying, a quicker task. She walked past booths that contained everything from brightly colored cloths, shiny trinkets and bells to booths with fruits, vegetables, meats & fishes as well as the staples one needed to cook: sugar, salt and other spices. There were even booths where one could buy all sorts of animals, be it for a pet or for a meal.
After haggling with the owner of the spice booth, she dropped a small bag of cinnamon in her basket and wrestled with the 20 pound bag of sugar. She had thoughts of maybe casting a levitate spell on the heavy bag, but decided against that: the spell might go awry and burst the bag. So instead, she heaved and ho-ed the bulky bag, cursing under her breath for not thinking to buy the sugar last.
"This should be enough sugar to last me throught the winter... or well... even for more than me," she whispered to herself as she came to a booth full of instruments of varied shapes and sizes. Setting the bag of sugar on the ground next to her basket, she fingered the strings of the item she had once heard the Bard play. It was rather dusty and had several scratches as well as missing a couple of strings.
"Excuse me," she spoke softly at first, then louder when she was ignored, "Excuse me please, but how much do you want for this?"
She looked up at the sky when she felt a snowflake hitting the end of her nose, then looked back to the merchant who was rubbing the stubble at his chin.
"Well, that there is quite the specimen, I hear tell it once belonged to a Prince. So I'd say I'd have to get about 100 platnium for it."
The dirty merchant smiled a big toothy grin, showing several empty spaces then wiped at his nose with the back of his grubby looking shirt sleeve. He continued to stare at her with the sloppy smile which unnerved her a bit.
"One hundred platnium?" she questioned him. "It's hardly worth 10 plat, much less what you want. Why, look at the condition of it," she continued, holding it by the neck to pick it up.
"Like I said, it was once owned by a Prince," the merchant countered back.
She turned the object over to inspect it for any cracks or holes. And finding only scratches, she held it so that her fingers were only touching the sides; and not the strings.
"It's missing some of the strings. Honestly," she said, shaking her head as she laid it back down on the instrument laden table, "you'd do good to get 20 silver for it."
The merchant squinted his eyes down at her as she stood her ground. It was apparent that this merchant wasn't the brightest one from the litter and also apparent to him that he might lose a sale.
She started to bend down to pick her basket and sugar up when the merchant held out his hand to stop her. "I'll let you have it for 75 plat and I'll throw in a new set of strings."
She raised her eyebrows at his offer, then shook her head as she picked the basket up. "I'd really be doing you a favor by giving you 5 plat since it's only worth 10 silver. And you know that 10 silver is equal to only 1 plat! Throw in the strings and I'll take it for 30 silver and we'll both be happy."
She tapped her small boot, waiting for his next move then smiled as he shook his head at the offer she had made. Handing over 30 pieces of silver, which was equal to 3 plat, she took the stringed object that had a strap attached to it, took the new strings then slung it over her head and neck to rest on her back. The neck of the object could be seen above her shoulder as she made her way home with her basket and her twenty pound sack of sugar.
She smiled as she trudged back through the snow that seemed deeper now and even the heavily falling snow didn't dampen her mood. It was always a good feeling for her to have gone shopping and to have gotten a good buy. She only hoped that her guest would be as pleased with her bargain as she was.
She only dropped the 20 pound bag twice on her way home and was relieved to see the glow of the lights through her windows and the twirling smoke from the fireplace. It would feel good to be in the warmth of her cottage and to get out of the heavy cloak. And... to put this heavy bag of sugar away.

By Michaelys: After heading into the cellar to get the ham, Michaleys found the clothing Bre'Cheye had mentioned lying folded up in the back. Stuffing them into his one arm and carrying the ham in the other, he ascended the stairs to the kitchen. Setting the clothing in a side chair, he tossed the ham on the counter to prepare it for baking. Thinking to himself, "Now, where can i find her spices..." he proceeded to begin searching the cupboards and pantry. next installment from: Page 4 Reply #45

By Bre'Cheye:
As she stood at the back door to her cottage with the 20 pound bag of sugar gripped tightly in her arms and the basket with the cinnamon resting on her arm, the snow now came up to well above her ankles. The top of her red hood was covered in snow and the bottom of her long dress was wet with snow. The end of the neck of the instrument she had found at one of the booths was sticking up above her shoulder as it rested on her back; it too covered with snow. With her right leg bent at the knee, she momentarily rested the sack of sugar on the soft material of her dress that covered her leg. She turned the knob with her free mittened hand then swept into the warm kitchen to find Michaelys searching through her cupboards.
"Michaelys! I'm back and guess what I found?!?!" she asked, not noticing the snow falling to the wooden floor. She plopped the bag of sugar on the cabinet then followed that with the basket which she finished by pulling the cinnamon out to show him. As she turned to open the door where she kept all of her spices, the instrument came into contact with the lower cabinet door with a slightly melodious twinging clunk.
Her cheeks were red from the bitter wind and the snow pelting her skin and the hair that hung out from her hood still had snow mixed through the blonde strands.
She wasn't about to pull the instrument around from her back, for she was hoping that he might notice the end of the neck sticking up from her shoulder and hoped he would be a little bit pleased, even though it as in need of some repair and attention.

By Michaelys: Seeing the door opening from the corner of his eye, at first he thought some form of snow faerie had gotten inside. Then a large bag of sugar landed on the counter, and the faerie turned out to be BreCheye. Her face bright red from the cold, and her hair and cloak covered with snow. As he tried to take it all in, she rummaged through her basket and pulled out some very aromatic cinnamon, he heard a muted sound, almost musical. Trying to see past all the snow, he saw how bright her eyes were, and that the glow came more from anticipation then the cold. Deciding to stop standing there like an oaf, he walked up to her, and helped take things off her hands. Starting to unwrap the cloak from about her form he was struck, almost literally, by the neck of the instrument she had on her back. Pausing for an instant, he continued to brush snow from her hair and pulled the cloak off to get it hung by the door, which he promptly shut to retain the warmth. Turning back to her he saw that, indeed, she had a lute strapped to her back. Stopping again, as a flood of warmth rushed through him, he gently asked if he might see the instrument. Then, realizing that she must be shivering, he escorted her into the front room, to stoke the fire and make sure she warmed up. Heading back into the kitchen, he found the wassail he had earlier seen during his search, and poured it into a mug. Then, coming back into the room, he took a hot poker from the fire and warmed the drink before handing it to her. Seeing her settled, with the instrument now in her lap, he asked, once again, if he could look at it.

As Michaelys began to help her out of her cloak and to brush the snow out of her hair, she couldn't help but begin to tell of her bargain, "You wouldn't believe my luck!" And as he ushered her into the living room to be closer to the fire, she continued; the lute still hanging on her back. "The merchant wanted far too much, but of course it probably was worth every bit... but, you know me..."
Now sitting on the sofa that faced the fireplace with the lute on her lap, she gladly took the hot mug of wassail and closed her eyes as she drank in the familiar favorite taste of apples, cinnamon and just a hint of orange juice. She placed the mug on the table next to the sofa, then handed the lute over to Michaelys to inspect.
Jumping up from the sofa, she turned her head back toward him as she pushed on the kitchen door, "Let me get the other thing."
A shiver ran through her from still being cold as she looked through the basket and then the pockets of her cloak. Smiling, she found the small package that was no bigger than an envelope, "Ah! There you are!!"
Back to the living room, she sat on her knees on the sofa, sideways and facing Michaelys who now sat on the other end. "Here," she said, holding her hand out with the envelope. "I even made the merchant throw in a new set of strings. Oh! I hope you can fix it, I loved the music you played that day in the Inn. Maybe you could play it, providing, you can fix it."
She sat on her knees on the sofa, her face full of excitement of the prospect that something she found might bring some joy to someone else. And... in the process... she would get to hear him play and enjoy his company.

By Michaelys: Taking the lute in his hands, he could feel the lingering presence of the previous owners. The young Bard, who gave it as a gift to an aspiring student. The student who grew into a fine minstrel, and passed it onto his son. The son, who was not himself musically inclined, but could work on instruments enough to get by, who sold it to the poor child in town, who in turn became a Guild Bard, known throughout the land for his songs, some of which were still sung today. Finally, the instrument passed to a young apprentice, and as the great bard got older, the apprentice was cast aside by others of the Guild, jealous to usurp his position. This final owner, barely able to play the most basic of tunes and needing to feed his young wife and child, sold the lute to a seedy merchant for a small amount of coin to feed his family. The lute sat for years, unkept and unused, passing from pawn shop to pawn shop, until a lucky young woman cast her eyes upon it. Feeling the touch of her hands, the residual magic left inside by the Great Bard reached out to her, asking to be bought. And although instruments have almost no awareness, the magic in this one was strong enough to sense the potential of being used my another musician, and thus was brought to Michaelys hands. Michaelys looked up at BreCheye with tears in his eyes. The gift she had just bestowed on him was like no other, and the yearning it brought to the fore was so intense, that he attempted to play a song on it right there, even knowing the strings to be out of tune. He gently strummed a quiet melody, and saw past the scratches and disuse to the heart of the instrument. Hearing it was sound, and could be salvaged, he gently set it beside him and quietly thanked her around a throat so tight he could barely speak. The unshed tears speaking volumes for him. He whispered, "Thank you, Bre', you may never know what this means to me."

She watched him as he took the lute and held it in his hands, her mind full of curiousity. She couldn't tell if he liked it or not but she did know he must be in deep thought. She continued to sit on her knees, the wet hem of her dress forgotten, and waited for his approval.
When he finally looked up at her, at first her heart sunk, for she was afraid the tears in his eyes were tears of not liking it. The simple tune he played caused her to breathe in slowly, the few notes he played having had a peaceful effect on her. When he choked out his words of thanks, she knew that he was pleased and the smile quickly grew on her face.
She reached across the couch to touch the sleeve of the shirt he now wore and said with much excitement, "I am so glad you liked it! I was hoping that you would, but I wasn't sure. Do you think you can fix it? Do you think it once belonged to a Prince??"
She stood with her back toward the fire in effort to get warmer. Rubbing her palms together then crossing her arms to rub the edges of her arms, she said with a slight chatter of the teeth, "It brings me so much joy to see that you liked it. And I hope that it brings you many days of joy as well."

By Michaelys An eyebrow quirked up as he responded, "A prince? Well, sort of, though not in the sense you're thinking of." He pulled out a piece of cloth and started rubbing the lute as he released the strings from the neck and the fretboard. A couple released with a very unmusical twang, and these he tossed into the hearth-fire. Still polishing the instrument, and finding nicks and scratches that will need repairing later, he spoke again. "This lute has a history, yes. As a matter of fact, it Did, at one time, belong to a noble man. He was a prince among musickers. A guild Bard, if my senses haven't entirely failed me. The songs he must of performed and created are probably in some church abbey somewhere. But the instrument was well crafted." He paused in his careful polishing to look at her. "You must have a touch of the gift yourself, to have picked up on its resonance." Looking at her for a moment more, he then bowed his head down and resumed his polishing. "Anyway, I shall do my best to make it an instrument worthy of its legacy." Looking back up after inspecting it closely, he asked, "Would you mind handing me those extra strings?"

Still standing in front of the fireplace to keep warm, she listened to Michaelys tell about what he sensed by just holding the instrument in his hands a few short minutes. She looked down at her hands and wondered if what he had guessed about her being able to sense a past owner. At his request for the strings, she picked them up and handed them over.
"If you don't mind," she said, stepping away from the fireplace, "I am going to get out of this dress." She bent to pull up the edge of the long dress to show the soppy material and her dampened boots.
Before disappearing behind the door on the right, which stood next to the door that led upstairs, she smiled back at Michaelys and added, "I'm so glad that you liked it."

By Fade: The little dragon opened his eyes as he rolled off his tiny bed that set in one corner of his Mistress' ground level bedroom. Speaking common, Fade said to his lady boss, "You bring me some apples? Or beans? And is that bard still here?" Bre'Cheye let the dress fall to the floor then quickly grabbed the flannel nightgown and pulled that over her head. She sat on the edge of her bed and yanked the boots off then followed those with the wet socks. "Give me those booties, Fade," Bre'Cheye said, pointing to the red knitted booties under the edge of her dresser. The 10 inch dragon wrestled with the booties that were almost as big as him, flapped his wings and landed on her bed. "Your booties, M'lady," Fade graciously said, dragonic sarcasm in his voice "You silly little dragon," Bre'Cheye laughed, taking the booties from the little creature. She pulled those on, then grabbed a knitted shawl to join Michaelys in the living room. Before leaving the room, she also grabbed a pink orcan blanket then made her way back to the couch where she made herself comfortable on the right side and leaned her head on the arm of the couch. "I'm just going to sit here for a bit while you work on that lute, then I'll go fix us something for our evening meal," Bre'Cheye promised as she pulled the blanket up around her legs and up toward her chin.

By Michaelys: Looking up to see that she'd returned, he finished replacing the last string, then gently tuned the instrument. Once it was set to his satisfaction, he played a soft, languid tune on it, almost a lullaby, softly quieting the room and a feeling peace stole upon his one observer. Then, a smile quirking his mouth up, he jumped right in to a jig, his fingers dancing across the strings. The sounds brought up the feelings of a country faire, the dancers and jugglers and acrobats. All the things that make a Faire lively. Almost it seemed, he could smell the aroma of sweet breads, venison, and cider. After a bit he stopped the music, quieting the strings with his palm. Holding the lute out from his body, he was amazed again to see that it fairly glowed. All the scratches and blemishes that had marred it cleaned off, erased as though it never seen harsh treatrment. Looking at Bre' in wonder he thanked his Goddess silently for her blessing in bringing him back into his good friends presence.

By Fade: As Bre'Cheye sat down, she looked at the lute he had been working on and was quite pleased with her purchase of the gift for Michaelys. The tune he played was such a relaxing one that she could almost fall asleep right there on the couch. Pulling the soft shawl around her shoulders and the pink orcan blanket around her legs, Bre'Cheye closed her eyes and smiled softly. She was unaware that her little 10 inch dragon was crawling their way with his rump and tail higher than his head. If one could see the tiny dragon, or at least know what was inside his thoughts, they would know that Fade was curious as to whether the Bard would harm his mistress and whether the Bard had any intentions on finding Fade's secret stash of apples and beans. But because it was virtually impossible to read a dragon's thoughts, the conclusion of most people at the dragon's actions would be that the pet was just being nosy. Fade had made it to the right corner of the couch and was ready to pounce on the Bard's boots to search them for the beans when the Bard smiled and started to play a more livlier tune. It was a tune that made the small dragon stand upright and raise his stubby arms above his head. It was as though the little dragon no longer had control over his own body. His feet began to tap madly and quickly to the beat of the jig the Bard was playing. The faster the Bard played, the faster the dragon's feet tapped, twisted and kicked. When the Bard finished the tune, the dragon fell on his plump tummy trying to catch his breath. All thoughts of searching the Bard's boots for the beans had left his mind. All he could think of was his sore feet. By Michaelys: Michaelys glanced to the side of the couch at a slight movement, and was amazed to see what looked like a small dragon! Knowing these creatures were extremely rare, he settled the lute back on his lap and played a gentle tune. Hoping to keep the creature from taking off before BreCheye could see it. By Bre'Cheye: She sat on the right side of the couch with her feet drawn up to the left side of her and the pink orcan blanket tucked under her legs. Her full attention was on Michaelys as he finished up repairing the lute she had found for him, and then she felt like she was floating on a cloud as he began to play a gentle, soothing tune. She turned where she sat, to sit sideways with her legs pulled up then leaned her head along the back of the couch. She was just about to doze off when Michaelys switched from the lulling melody to a more lively number. Her right foot began tapping beneath the pink orcan blanket to the time of the jig while she patted her knee with her fingers. When she heard the sudden rapid tapping on the floor to her right, she leaned forward to see what it was and could only smile when she saw it was her pet dragon Fade. It was so humerous to see Fade involuntarily dancing that all she could do was watch him until he flopped down when the song had ended. "Fade!" she laughed, reaching down to lift the tiny dragon to sit in the middle of the couch. "What are you doing in here, you silly little dragon." By this time, Fade had flipped to lie on his back. She rubbed his rounded scaly tummy until his left foot began to shake which made Bre'Cheye laugh. Looking up to Michaelys, she pointed to the small winged dragon, "This is my little pet. His name is Fade." She let her gaze drop back to the dragon as she scratched behind his tiny little ear.

By Michaelys: Looking on in wonder, Michaelys just couldn't believe his eyes. Not only was the dragon real, but it had also been befriended by BreCheye! Looking at the little Dragon lying on the couch he wondered if this one liked the same treats those near his homeland enjoyed. Resolving to look thru the forest for them at a later time, he realized he was staring so averted his eyes up to Bre'. "So, have you been friends long? I have heard of Dragons befriending people in the past, but to see Fade just sitting with you is quite the surprise." By Bre'Cheye: Fade was enjoying every bit of attention he was getting, especially the belly rub. She smiled down at the creature who was now snoozing and snuggled up against her covered leg. She looked up to Michaelys to answer his question, "I didn't find him he found me. After I left the Inn that day..." she breathed in deeply as she recalled the first time she had met Michaelys and the day she had ran away; afraid the men had been after her. "After I left the Inn, I was offered a room at Sirinnu's castle and he took me into his clan. One day after hunting in the mountains, I was making my way back to Sirinnu's castle. And I thought that someone... or something was following me, but every time I turned around, there wasn't anyone there. Just before I got back to the castle, I came upon an apple tree, so I thought I might gather enough to make a pie. Or well, at least attempt to make one." She smiled at Michaelys then laughed, "I'm a lot better at cooking now." Looking down at the tiny sleeping dragon, she touched the even smaller snout before continuing her story. "When I picked that first apple, out of nowhere, here came this rapid flash right to my hand. Before I knew it, my apple was gone and I saw that little dragon wrestling with it. He followed me back to the castle and from what little I knew from the old Dragonic language, I figured enough that his name was Fade and he loved apples. Apples and beans. Oh, and he said he was full grown. I'm not sure of that though. Seems he doesn't know how to breathe fire any more than I know how to cast a correct teleport spell." She covered her mouth to keep from bursting out in a severe case of giggles. "Everytime he tries to blow fire, it comes out the other end! He's a great pet, and he tries to protect me." Still sitting sideways with her feet on the cushion of the couch, she nudged her toe out from beneath the blanket then settled her gaze on Michaelys' face. "I'm so glad you're my friend."
