This is rehash of a conversation Dath and I had a week or so ago. Since he hasn't posted about it, I thought I would. Wouldn't it be neat to introduce more of an RPG feel into the game again, without really disrupting the gameplay we're all used to? Why not rewrite some/most of the descriptions, or at least add on to them? As a wordsmith, I'd be happy to volunteer any skills I have toward making the words something more than to just skip over. I'd think it should be possible to maybe have more than one outcome when you beat an opponent, or when something at all happens that requires a description. Wouldn't be a big chance, but might add some nice little spice. Branching off of this, would it be possible to use the same coding used for frys and the Wheel to introduce other random encounters? A whole panorama of events could be per-generated, with some more likely than others. Even simple things like "A thief fleeing bounty hunters pays you to take his loot off his hands" *earn X marks and ____ junk* or "You have too much to drink at the tavern and get drawn into a card game" *lose 1/4 of the marks you carry* The gaining or losing wouldn't have to be large, but something out of the ordinary to spice things up. There's the opportunity to get quite creative here, to generate many encounters, so that if you only encounter one every, say, 100 quests, you never know what you'll get. What would happen if your level 5 alt gets sucked up by a tornado and dropped into Hie Brasil, even? Imagine the fun! Last idea, which would use coding similar to the random encounter generator. At a certain point/level with certain gear, most of us are never worried about not being able to defeat a certain enemy. Am I right? What if we could introduce a little more danger into the game. What if, using the random encounter coding, a "normal" monster could be given boosted stats? What if you're questing blindly (admit it, we all go on auto-pilot at times) and suddenly you run into a shogun with 3000 guts? That ieatsu's going to hurt a lot more, isn't it? What about a panda with 1500 wits? The coding could simply multiply a monster's attributes by, say, three times the normal parameters. For this added difficulty, the skill and fame could be 3x as great. Not to say we should all be dropping like flies, but it'd be nice if we had to pay more attention while questing.

Hehe i posted almost the exact same idea in the SN forums gawayn! I think it would be really nice if we reworked a lot of the writing ingame...not changing the game at all, but i would really like to have more of a story in the game. I have some more ideas in this regard, will post them up later. I like the idea of more random events aswell, would make it more interesting to quest!

Oh that's right, I'd forgotten you brought that up Bean. Sorry! Maybe it was such a good idea, I thought it needed to be said a second time. Let me know if you want help with that. Words are what I do.

As soon as i'm actually working on the game i will be calling on as many people as possible to help with whatever aspects they can. There are several coding and gameplay improvements we can bring in, but i think an overhaul of the story aspect of the game would make gameplay very much more interesting without the need to change any aspect of the game itself. If we get a decent story into the game by editing things such as the transition between areas, and information you get as you progress through the game i think that might lead into some awesome new updates at some point in the future

Oooh, races would be cool! So long as they don't have too much effect on game play, races would be very cool!

it would take some thought on what races would be put in, and then what attributes they would recieve, whether their attributes be brand new and not too similar to the already established clan rares..thats the challenge

I like races ideas too! Could be stats benefits:
humans : +1% wits elves: + 1% charm Orcs and dwarves : + 1% guts
Or it could be linked with already known attributes: Humans are born with tricky Elves with ranger Dwarves with catseyes, etc.
Or brand new abilities specific to such races
Would it be needed to create anew character for it? I bet it could be possible ... while having very small consequences on the game, but helping rp feeling. Gives us something to choose from once , at character creation. (Or could we modify our race with a faceless potion?)

How about making unid weapons unwearable till there identified. Truely making them unid, unpeakable and more valuable. I would buy unids then lol.

thats a great idea bonecraven...i'm always a wee bit suspicious buying unids as it is so easy to find out their stats without iding them...

Greetings all! I have returned from the depths of the Abyss to impose my wisdom to you all.
My first comment is that I have heard many great ideas. I always hated how stiff and unmoving the skill list has been. I would like for that to change too. I do have an idea about gear though. Rusting is tedious and unnecessary. I do feel it is necessary to make it a requirement to keep looking for good gear though. To help with that there can be a limit to each item of equipment. Make it so things can break. That way you find good gear and over a set number of uses there will be a percentage chance that the item in question can get damaged. If not repaired, say at the smith, then the next time that message comes up it would break. Repairs can even maybe bring down the item a small amount, or a random amount. This way you always have a need for another piece of equipment. All the extra gear piled up will be used now.
I don't think having fighter skills help you be able to wear higher lvl gear is good. Makes it too easy to get high class gear on a low lvl char. It should take great effort to get to that point in the game, not just money and enough stats to buy 15 fighter skills.
I would like to see a way of having low lvl gear being comparable to some of the higher gear. I myself am a mage, so I wouldn't wear a DSJ, but then I can't wear a strong armor. There are all kinds of silver, or crystal lefty and righty weaps. I would like better options for the head, body and feet. At least 2-3 different items of each lvl for each item location. That way you have more combinations at every lvl of the game.
Those are the big changes I had on mind to imrove the game. I also don't like the need to go to the queen every so often to keep favor up. I would rather quest, but have to waste time there as to prevent the loss of rank. If there was a way to gain favor during quests I would be out there more and enjoying it more.
So it's good too see things alive and well here. Come by DG and say hi. I will be getting the clan back into the top 10 here soon. Hope this is something we can expect at least by next summer. Sit inside all winter and make DC more awsome then it is.

Having items break sounds way worse than rust, to me. Nobody will bother wearing their nice items anymore, out of fear that they'll break, and will instead just quest with mid-range suits that can be easily replaced. And if you have to repair every now and then to keep them from breaking, well isn't that nearly as tedious as rust? Besides, with blessings, rust is almost not noticeable. Now, I understand there are complaints with rust, so I can see possibly losing that. But just as a general observation, it seems like people are just trying to get rid of any little thing that has been annoying to them in the past. I think there needs to be things similar to rust, or Panic, in the game. If there is no risk, how is the game interesting? We may feel, after playing for a while, that simply questing for higher items is enough. But a new player may quickly realize that we've taken out any sting this game might have had just to make the vets happier, and might not be interested in staying. Every game I've played has bad things in it as well as fun things, so suggestions for getting rid of things like Panic, or rust, always kinda seem strange to me. I thought rust was introduced in a horrible way, not letting people quest for oils first to use before rust actually hit, therefore rusting a bunch of stuff. But, since then, I think rust has been a great addition to the game. It takes little more than a 2-3 second routine to keep safe from rust, but it makes sure you are careful with your items, and the RP aspect of maintaining your items daily to keep them in ship-shape condition is very appealing to me.
