J, K, 8, 4 11, 13, 8, 4 J=11 K=13 13-11=2 8-2=6 6 x 4 = 24 and the other one: 5,5,5,1 I've tried every possible combination: 5+1 = 6 6x5 = 30 30-5 = 25 5/5= 1 1+5 = 6 5-1 = 4 6x4 = 24 Every solution either requires an extra five or an extra one

Every solution either requires an extra five ... This is key. Reflect on your statement there a little. You're close and the answer is still out there. In the meantime, an exhalt for perseverance.

5x5=25 25-1 = 24 now what to do with that extra 5? 5/5 = 1 (identify property) but that requires 2 fives, not 1

5/5 = 1 (identify property) but that requires 2 fives, not 1 If only you knew how close you were. 8, 8, 9, J

8, 8, 9, J
J=11
11-9 = 2 2x8 = 16
16+8 = 24

I seriously spent almost an entire day trying to figure out sirinnu's. I am glad (and yet frustrated lol) to hear it actually doesnt have a solution
and to clarify, we are or are we not allowed to use powers? I am trying to figure out the 5 5 5 1 combo, and so far I need the use of powers to do it
5 x 5 = 25
1^5 = 1
25 - 1 = 24
but then again thats with powers.

I'm going to quote myself Valid operations are the four basic arithmetic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. No other operation is allowed, i.e. no raising things to powers, taking square roots, etc. To encourage thinking of fractions, I'm posting this combination, which can only be solved using fractions: 5,5,5,1 Raising things to powers is not allowed. As you can see, it lets you circumvent the "use all cards rule," which is the nature of the challenge, by doing things like 1^5. Same reason why derivatives are not allowed, since dx/dy of a constant is just zero, allowing you to bypass the use of an "uncooperative" number. Only basic arithmetic operations are valid, and the 5,5,5,1 has a solution that obeys these rules. And yeah, sirinnu's hand does not have a solution, sorry for any confusion that may have caused. Keep on trying guys. And don't forget to post a new combination when you solve one. From now on I'm only going to post combinations I know have at least one solution. 8,8,9,J

8, 8, 9, J J=11 11-9 = 2 2x8 = 16 16+8 = 24 There's the solution to 8,8,9,J Here's a new one: 1,3,5,7

1,3,5,7
7-3= 4 1+5 = 6
4*6 = 24
Sorry about that, I actually did know you solved that one but for some reason reposted the same combo.
7, K, 6, 3

too easy:
K(13) -7 = 6*
6*3 = 18**
18** + 6 = 24
Next hand:
4 , 5 , 9, 1

4, 5, 9, 1
4-1=3 3*5 = 15 15+9 = 24
nice one.

lets see if I can do this one:
5, 12, 11, 1
5+1=6 6+12=18 18+11=29 29-5=24
not sure if you can use a number twice

Closest I seem to be able to get is 25 without doubling up. Kael didn't post a new set just in case, so let's keep the ball rolling. If someone can come up with a solution to the last one please post it, I've been racking my brain but I keep coming back to 25.
