Hmm Sir I just tested what you described with an alt. It seems a priest is defensive rather than passive. One hit made it exhibit hostile behavior, 2 made it aggressive. It was kinda funny that after 1 attack, my alt was almost dead and I had to heal in between rounds I'll check again with a Shangalan peasant.. I think those were passive Edit: Ok I tested the peasant, and indeed, after one attack, I tried to flee, it did not chase me. Then the peasant is passive, and the priest is defensive. This seems to be the best way to tell the difference between the two behaviors, but honestly, I think the only 2 passive enemies in the entire game are Shangala's Peasants and the Field's Merchants. Unfortunately, it's highly unlikely to be able to test on the merchant, since they pretty much die in one hit to anything. Maybe if tithed a lot, and purposely got low stats on a character, then it can attack a merchant without killing it. Edit2: Actually that does make sense. If Fred's idea for peasants and merchants were to make them filler creatures to make things interesting for players targetting ninjas and wizards, the passive behavior probably also causes them to flee much more often than defensive. Thus if a player mistakens a peasant/merchant for a ninja/wizard, it'll most likely cause them to lose 1 quest from being unable to catch the enemy.

Wow, Xene, great research you're doing. Have an exalt I had a thought about using Mandrakes to gain wits. I used a bunch of drakes on a low wit character (175 wits) to beat the wits down to less than 100, then started running from everything (except snots of course) in the forest. Alas, I didn't notice any great improvement in wits gaining odds. Now, I've only tried this once so it's not much of a sample, but before I go any further with it I thought I'd throw it out there. Perhaps I'm only replicating someone else's research here? Or, does anyone have any thoughts on this? Seems logical....using mandrakes causes you to lose wits (albeit temporarily), so shouldn't this strategy increase your odds of gaining wits?

I'd imagine your chance to gain wits is based on your total wits, and not the modified value. If you do enough testing to suggest otherwise, please do tell

thanks xene for clarifying priests behavior, , I knew something was wrong in my theory because when I did tried , the result looked similar to annaconda... so yeah, it means they have to be defensive more than passive. I'm glad that we now have a relevant way to doublecheck all monsters behaviors, , well as u say, it would be hard to prouve it with lowish monsters , as merchant, or to test it on the timid fearies hehe, , but we can always use massivly rusted gear to make sure we dont kill the foes we are testing it on. (I shud try that -65ka, -15k d, -85k skill snakey I got) I havent tried this for a while torra, , but after a discussion some time ago, (by omnisciant too, ) I came to deduction that if ur wits , after using drakes, drop as 100/300, , ur main number is still 300, , just as with guts, , if u are at 5 /1000 guts left, the calcul to gain guts is still made from 1000 not 5.... Tough , loth emnati, tough otherwise, , we shud doublechek that too.. edit, I'Ve just gained 2 guts on an alt hehe was trying to gain wits though but its worth more tries.

Speaking of testing, Sir or anyone, do you happen to know if it's possible for creatures to give fame in decimal values? I'm assuming all the creatures I'm killing are giving fame in integer values, but I might be getting a lot of information wrong if it's possible for something to give something like 0.5 values.
Hopefully I'm right, it's rather annoying to check the fame values multiple times for the same creature, especially some of the rarer encounters.

from all fame lists I've seen in the previous years (from previous dc versions) no decimals anywhere... Many creatures around the field give 0 fame though.

Thanks Sir, I had a weird thought that maybe Fred made it possible to gain less than 1 fame from a fight, which would make things overly complicated if I were to try to find the fame values for every single creature.

Perhaps this is a little off track....But, what determines your odds of getting your quest back when you run away from agressive monsters? (Thereby giving you another chance of running away and gaining a wit ) Or is it always the same chance after you get 3 trader skills? I had thought that your skill level was a factor...but a couple of snots ran away from Torra the other day (no, not Toki and Orrv )!!! I was stupified?!?

I can't guarantee 100%, but I'm pretty sure that...
The chance that you get away from an aggro (or whether you catch a fleeing monster) is based on skill.
The chance of retaining a quest after a successful flee is based on charm.
I also have a feeling that it's harder to keep your quest from an aggressive than a hostile, so perhaps if they're aggro, they get some sort of bonus as well. This part is merely a hunch though, but the first part should be right.

So basically what he's saying, Torra, is that you're not charming enough.

Ya know, you two, my arm is getting tired and my Brickmaster 2000 is getting worn to a nub!!! I'll have you know, I'm plenty FREAKIN CHARMING!!! Thanks for the info, Xene. I'm trying to keep my stats even so have actually been avoiding gaining charm. I'm about 100 behind on Wits at the moment

I noticed that I had increased success once I started building up more Trader skills. I'm at around 25. Of course, I've also got over 1200 charm.

Not only. I also mingle quite a bit. If I'm not gambling, I'm usually mingling. I rarely game.
