Ok, so when I make dsj's I usually just overload my backpack until I can't overload it anymore. Does this have the potential to lower stats on the dsj's? Any other tips in dsj making?

I'm shure what you have in your backpack, has nothing to do with the next dsj you'l make (when the stats are computed, what you have on yourself, or your stats, or anything else is not relevant, , same thing when you found gear by questing)
I Dont want to comment more, , overloading to some point might be considered cheating by some people. (As I'm not 100% shure I prefer not going any further on that way publickly)

No need to overload or anything. Just do what I would (ideally) do:
1) Equip a weapon with Merchant. This will increase your backpack space to 100. 2) Equip a weapon with Armor so that you can identify DSJs from your backpack instead of exiting and entering the castle. 3) Of your 100 backpack slots, one of the slots should be for your Dragon Scales and another slot should be for your marks. This gives you 98 available slots. 4) Make the DSJs and dump all the ones that you don't want to keep.

How do you equip something with merchant? Isn't that something that you have to be lucky enough to find?

I do have merchant dsj's. Thanks for the advice. As for overloading my pack, I'll stop due to it being it seems a bit unfair.
